Meet the Structural Rhinoplasty Team

The Plastic Surgery & Aesthetics Medical Center at Chongqing West District Hospital brings together four consultants working inside a tertiary general hospital. Tongchun Mao, MD, is responsible for the medical review of this site; the other three are named because graft-based nasal surgery genuinely involves them — complex and revision cases, the skin the graft has to sit under, and the aftercare that determines the final result.

Tongchun Mao

Tongchun Mao (毛彤春)

Deputy Director & Head of Aesthetic Surgery · Vice Chief Physician, Licensed Aesthetic Attending · Lead Physician of This Site

Structural and revision nasal surgery · graft-based support · airway assessment

Dr. Tongchun Mao is an aesthetic surgeon at Chongqing West District Hospital, where he is Deputy Director and Head of Aesthetic Surgery in its Plastic Surgery & Aesthetics Medical Center and the responsible physician for this site. He personally performs more than 700 operations a year, within hospital standards of assessment, anaesthesia and follow-up.

On this site his judgement is the one the guides are written around. Before any plan is discussed he establishes whether the nose is short of support or merely shaped in a way the patient dislikes, because those two findings lead to different operations and only one of them involves a donor site. His stated position on graft-based surgery is that the amount added should be the smallest amount that solves the problem, and that a nose which only needs refining should be refined rather than rebuilt. He is also the person who says so when the honest answer is a further operation is unlikely to improve on what the patient already has.

Clinical focus

  • Structural grafting and the assessment of nasal support
  • Revision nasal surgery, including noses that have already lost cartilage
  • Functional assessment of the nasal valve alongside aesthetic planning
  • The donor-site decision: septum, ear or rib, and how much is needed
  • Judging a rebuilt nose honestly, with a planned two-year review point

The donor site is part of the consent

Patients are told what will be done to the nose and then discover that the chest or the ear hurts more in the first week. A plan should name the donor site, its own healing time, its own scar and its own rare risks before the operation, not after the dressing comes off.

Shaoliang Wang

Shaoliang Wang (王韶亮)

Director, Plastic Surgery & Aesthetics Medical Center · Vice Chief Physician, Associate Professor, Doctor of Medicine

Complex and revision nasal cases · tertiary-hospital surgical backstop

Dr. Shaoliang Wang is Director of the Plastic Surgery & Aesthetics Medical Center at Chongqing West District Hospital. Within the team he provides the surgical perspective and the tertiary-hospital backstop — the assessment when an operation is the honest answer, and the hospital-level care for the rare complication that needs it.

Within this site his part of the work is the case that should not go ahead on the first plan: a nose that has already lost its cartilage, an infection, or a revision that needs more than one specialty in the room.

Clinical focus

  • Center leadership and multidisciplinary case review
  • Surgical assessment when an operation is the honest answer to descent or excess skin
  • Hospital-based care for the rare complication that needs theatre-level management
Ke He

Ke He (何锞)

Deputy Director & Head of Skin & Laser Aesthetics · Attending Physician, Licensed Aesthetic Attending

Skin assessment and scar aftercare · surgical aftercare

Dr. Ke He is Deputy Director and head of skin and laser aesthetics within the Plastic Surgery & Aesthetics Medical Center at Chongqing West District Hospital. Within the team her role is the device and injectable assessment, and the honest referral when a problem needs an operation rather than a needle.

A graft is only as good as the skin draped over it. Her part of the assessment is skin thickness, scarring tendency and the aftercare that decides whether a rebuilt bridge stays invisible.

Clinical focus

  • Device and injectable assessment before any treatment plan
  • Staged planning judged against standardised photographs
  • Honest referral when a problem needs an operation rather than a needle
Yongbo Jia

Yongbo Jia (贾勇波)

Deputy Director & Head of Dermatology · Vice Chief Physician, Licensed Aesthetic Attending

Dermatological assessment before nasal surgery

Dr. Yongbo Jia is a dermatologist within the Plastic Surgery & Aesthetics Medical Center at Chongqing West District Hospital. Within the team his role is medical skin assessment — diagnosing and managing pigment and barrier conditions, and treating skin that a device or an injection has irritated.

Some conditions that look like a surgical problem are dermatological, and operating through active skin disease in the area is a route to a poor scar. His part is the skin diagnosis that has to be settled first.

Clinical focus

  • Medical skin assessment behind injectable treatment plans
  • Diagnosis and management of pigment and barrier conditions
  • Dermatologic care of skin after irritation or a delayed reaction

Questions about a nose that may need support rebuilt?

An assessment examines the nose inside and out, establishes whether support is the problem at all, and explains what a donor site would ask of you. If a smaller operation would serve you better, that is what we will advise.
